White peony has been used in China for at least 1,500 years, primarily for 'yin' deficiency states. Its main use is as a women's tonic herb for heavy and/or painful periods and menopausal problems. For this purpose, it combines well with Chinese angelica. It is also tradidionally combined with liquorice root to help normalise the menstrual cycle. In addition, it has an anti-spasmodic action making it helpful in colic/IBS, muscle cramps and tension headaches.
Avoid during pregnancy and lactation. Abnormally heavy or painful periods should be investigated by your GP.
