Hyperhydrosis - Excessive Sweating
Excessive sweating (hyperhydrosis) can be caused by a variety of factors. Stress is probably the msot common, although some people just seem to be more prone to sweating generally. In more rare cases it may be caused by an endocrine problem such as an over active thyroid. In women, the menopause frequently causes increased sweating and heat in the form of hot flushes. In this case, herbs containg natural plant hormones are required such as sage, liquorice, red clover, wild yam.If the sweating occurs characteristically at night, then a chronic infection may be implicated, so for all these reasons it is always a good idea to get general health checked over by your GP before embarking on self-treatment.
Assuming that all is well and there are no underlying problems, then the first step is to ensure that the diet is healthy with lots of raw foods, fluid and a minimum of heating foods such as sugar, alcohol, and overly spicy foods.
Sage is probably the most obvious herb to try first - the Greek sage sold by Artemis is safer to take over the long term than garden sage. If the sweating is triggered by stress, then consider hops, passion flower and valerian. Where the sweat is very malodorous, then cleansing herbs such as dandelion and burdock can be tried.
