Seeking Professional Help
Many simple health problems are amenable to self-help with herbal medicine. But sometimes your health problem may be more complicated, you could be taking a lot of orthodox medication, you may be pregnant or breast feeding or you simply don't know where to begin. If this is the case then having a consultation with a qualified medical herbalist may be the answer. You can contact the National Institute of Medical Herbalists for a list of practitioners in your area. There are many advantages to seeing a qualified medical herbalist:
- They will take a full medical case history and put together a prescription of herbs that is individually tailored to your particular needs.
- They will also adjust that prescription as treatment develops.
- They will attempt to get to the root of the problem.
- They have training in medicine, diagnosis and clinical examination skills and they will know when you need to see your own GP.
- They may liaise with your GP where necessary (with your consent only).
- They have access to a very wide range of high quality herbs, often in more powerful preparations than commonly available over the counter.
- They will give you lots of dietary and lifestyle advice, and the knowledge to be able to maintain your health improvement via diet and lifestyle where possible.
- It can be very cost effective to see a practitioner, especially if you are paying out for a number of over the counter herbal remedies and supplements.
When choosing a practitioner, do not be afraid to ask them about their qualifications, training and experience. You may wish to ask about cost, consultation length, approximate number of consultations required and rough guide to length of treatment.
