Period Pain

Can Devil's Claw Tuber be used for Period Pain? The herbalist writes ...
Devil's claw may have an effect on period pain as it has an anti-inflammatory action, but it isn't the first herb that comes to mind.

It is important to try and determine which category the pain falls into. Is it the congestive type which is characterised by bloated feelings premenstrually and dull aching congested feelings during the period (there may be accompanying constipation before the period)?

Or is it the spasmodic type which is characterised by waves of more colicky type pain and may improve once the period gets started properly. Some women experience both types together.

Congestive period pain is better approached using herbs which improve pelvic circulation such as Chinese angelica, rosemary and yarrow. Any associated sluggish bowel should also be treated using gentle bulking agents such as psyllium husks, and ensuring lots of fruit and veg in the diet.

The colicky type may respond better to herbs which relax the uterus such as cramp bark, black haw, valerian, cinnamon and ginger.

Chinese angelica and black cohosh may be helpful in both types, and it is interesting to note that black cohosh is also used as an anti-inflammatory herb for arthritis. Please check the contra-indications for all the herbs carefully.

Severe period pain may indicate an underlying problem such as endometriosis which is better treated by a herbal practitioner. If the period pain is a new symptom or it has become much more severe, it may be worth getting a check-up at the GP.

Diet and lifestyle are important too in any type of period pain. A good balance of essential fatty acids found in oily fish and seeds is vital. Also lots of fruit and veg and a generally healthy diet. Those with the congestive period pain often find that exercise helps. However, women with the spasmodic pain should take it easy and avoid vigorous exercise during the pain.
