Like its common and Latin names suggest, motherwort has actions on the heart and female reproductive system. It is traditionally used for nervous palpitations, and to stimulate menstrual flow. It is particularly useful for hot flushes associated with palpitations. For menopausal problems it combines well with black cohosh or red clover.
Avoid in pregnancy or if suffering from heavy menstrual bleeding. Heart problems are best treated by a qualified herbalist in conjunction with your GP. Seek advice if you have an existing heart disorder before taking motherwort.
