Gastritis - Meadowsweet and Marshmallow
I have had a Gastroscopy and have been treated by the doctor for Gastritis. I find that Meadowsweet and Marshmallow Root tinctures sooth the burning pain very much. How long can I safely continue to use these herbs? I have also heard Goldenseal is good for gastritis - why don't you sell it and if I buy it can how long can I use it?The Herbalist writes ...
Meadowsweet and marshmallow root are both very gentle herbs that can be taken over the long-term, so there is no problem with using them for a good 5 or 6 months. If after this time your gastritis has not resolved, then visit a herbalist to attempt a permanent resolution. Slippery elm powder is also very helpful for relief of burning and helping to heal the gastric mucosa, and can be taken as a drink between meals or as required. The goldenseal is a differnet matter; this should only be taken for a short course (about 4-6 weeks) with a break before taking again, although hopefully it should do its job in one course. Barberry root (berberis vulgaris) contains similar constituents to goldenseal making it a good substitute for this endangered plant (this is why Artemis do not supply goldenseal, although they will soon have cultivated supplies available).
Diet is important too. Alcohol and smoking are great aggravators of gastritis, along with red meat, fatty and spicy foods. Small, regular meals can be helpful. Pears and cooked cabbage are particularly soothing on the stomach.
