Borage

I find it very difficult to find Borage as a tincture or a dried herb. Why do so few retailers seem to sell Borage herbal products?

The herbalist writes ...
Although borage is not a restricted herb, there have been a few concerns over the content of pyrrolizidine alkaloids found in the plant. These are the same constituents that are found in comfrey and have led to the discontinued use of comfrey internally. Although the content within borage is smaller and of a slightly different structure which is thought to be less harmful, there are still concerns that long term use of this plant may cause liver problems in a small number of susceptible individuals. Borage is a herb that I personlly like very much and I use within my practice quite frequently, although in smallish doses. However, I am in a position to be able to monitor my patients and check their case histories. It is not herb I would use with those people who have a history of liver function problems. Because we cannot monitor who will buy the herb over the website, we decided to leave it off the list.

There are many alternative herbs to borage. If you let us know what you wish to use it for, I may be able to suggest alternatives to you. Borage is easy to grow and can be dried quite easily too. Most good herbal books will tell you how to dry herbs. Andrew Chevallier's book 'The Encyclopaedia of Medicinal Plants' is particularly good (the book is available at www.thinkherbal.co.uk.
