Natural Preservative System used in Artemis Creams

Artemis creams have been formulated by a professional herbalist and are hand-mixed in small batches. They contain a high level of aromatic waters, mixed with marigold, St. John's wort or comfrey oil and some decocted or infused herbs. The active ingredients have been widened to include wheatgerm oil, evening primrose oil and cold pressed olive oil. The creams do not contain any mineral oils.

A programme was started in April 2003 to upgrade all Artemis Creams to use a newly developed and completely natural preservative system which has not been tested on animals. The preservative system is called Biovert and is based on a milk enzyme. This peservative meets all the challenge test requirements for bacterial and fungal growths, but is based on a natural and entirely harmless substance.

The following summary of Biovert contains extensive quotes from an article in Soap, Perfumery and Cosmetics Magazine.

"While products need some sort of preservative to prevent deterioration, so far no truly plant derived system has appeared on the market, and most forms do not bio-degrade easily. Now, ... [there is] a preservative system which, although not plant derived, is based on a naturally occurring anti-microbial system ...[which has not] undergone animal testing.

"The basic source for the new system is Lactoperoxidase, as found in bovine milk. In nature it is generally understood that this system is an important factor in developing the immune system of new born calves.

"Evidence of the anti-bacterial activity of the basic system in vivo and in vitro has [already] been reported in scientific literature but [there have since been] considerable advances on this.

But perhaps the best selling point of the system is that it has not involved any animal testing ... human patch tests of shampoo and deodorant formulations up to 10 times the normal recommended concentration are said to have shown the new system to be no more irritant than a standard, unperfumed moisturising cream."
