Herb/Drug - Anti-coagulants
We advise all patients on anti-coagulant therapy to seek treatment with a qualified medical herbalist rather than self treating. There is a list of practitioners at www.nimh.org.uk. There are a number of herbs with a known or theoretical risk of interaction with anti-coagulant medication. Although Black cohosh is not thought to be highly problematic, it does contain salycilates which could theoretically cause a problem with anticoagulants. If wish to take the Black cohosh for menoapusal problems a qualified herbalist will be able to draw from a much wider range of herbs and give dietary advice too. We would also recommend that you inform your GP of any herbs you are taking whilst on the anti-coagulant therapy.
