Air Travel
I suffer with bloating and jet lag when I travel by air. Then there are concerns about deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Can you suggest any herbs that can ease the discomfort of long haul flights? The herbalist writes ...
Firstly, drink plenty of water and avoid dehydrating drinks such as alcohol and coffee. Many people who suffer from oedema worry that the problem will worsen if they drink more water, but increased water consumption will actually help. Obviously move about on the plane as much as possible. If there is any hsitory of DVT or blood coagulation problems in the family, have a chat with your GP before the flight. S/he may suggest a small dose of aspirin.Herbally, there has been interest in Ginko biloba, as it has a blood thinning effect in large enough doses. Ginger and garlic can also keep blood 'thin'. However, as far as I am aware there is no clear evidence that these herbs will prevent DVT on long haul flights as yet.
Korean ginseng can help with jet lag (do check the contra-indications), and herbs such as yarrow, dandelion leaf and clivers may help with ankle oedema, but take them after the flight as they tend to have a slight diuretic effect.
