Abcesses

External Treatment

I have an abscess on my back and have been recommended St Johns Wort Oil. Is there anything I can use with it?

The aromatherapist writes ...
You can use St Johns Wort Oil as the base oil and add the following essential oils : Lavender, Chamomile Roman and Tea Tree. Lavender is a cicatricant (cell renewal agent) so helps the formation of new cells. Chamomile Roman is good for skin conditions and assists healthy skin as well as operating as a pain reliever. Tea Tree has powerful antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties which enhance the properties of the other two oils. These three oils work well when combined together.

Internal Treatment

The herbalist writes ...
In herbal medicine, abscesses tend to be treated using liver and skin remedies. Burdock root is indicated for this condition, alongside herbs such as Echinacea, marigold and clivers. A tea with clivers, marigold and nettles would be good using Echinacea and Burdock as tinctures. The diet should be light with lots of fruit and vegetables, plenty of water (2 litres daily) and keeping meat, sugar and fats (apart from fish and seed oils) to a minimum. If the abscess is not resolving or there is a tendency to form them, see a qualified herbalist or naturopath.
